Jobs in Polokwane
Polokwane is the capital of Limpopo province and the most important city in northern South Africa. It is the natural stop-over point between the country’s economic heartland, Gauteng province which is 300Km away, and the Zimbabwe border 200Km further north. It also offers an easy route for exports to the neighboring countries of Botswana, Mozambique and Swaziland.
The region has a dry, semi-arid climate with a dry winter and a rainy summer season.
Two major sources of Polokwane jobs are the agricultural and freight industries. On any given day, fresh produce such as tomatoes, citrus fruit, bananas and avocados make the daily rail trip to Johannesburg. Tourism is another big employer as the city is also a major hunting destination with easy access to the Kruger National Park.
But the best jobs in Polokwane are to be found in the large companies that are based here, in part because of the city’s status as a major export gateway. Coca-Cola has a major factory here as does South Africa Breweries, both of which are big employers. The four largest banks in South Africa have at least three branches each in the city. And perhaps not surprisingly, the town also hosts upwards of 11 major schools, making it a good bet for teachers and related professionals.
Media companies also love the city. The country’s largest TV broadcaster, the South African Broadcasting Corporation, and the country’s largest independent radio station, Jacaranda, both have a big branch here.
